New Windsor mom's idea helps US troops

She starts group to mail care packages

NEW WINDSOR — Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Lucy Mercado's Support Our Heroes foundation gets the bulk of donations that fill the care packages she sends to U.S. troops overseas all year long.

In fact, she tries to save much of what she doesn't need immediately to help stretch the supply through the rest of the year.

Yet, for the second year in a row, Mercado's been having trouble making that stretch.

As the nation celebrated the day that honors those troops, Veterans Day, she showed a reporter and photographer how her supply on hand has been reduced to about six or eight small boxes of donated goods like potato chips and candy.
